“Familia Hai” A program long used to strengthen families and, by extension, communities, has been making a quiet but powerful impact since its arrival in Tanzania five years ago. Family Hui (pronounced in Tanzania as “Familia Hai”) brings together groups of families with young children who live in close proximity to each other. The groups meet with a trained peer leader for 12 weeks with a focus on positive parenting, child development and shared experiences. Many “Familia Hai” then continue to meet — sometimes for many years — providing both parents and children with a valuable source of support and community. These are, quite simply, safe places where “Familia Hai” members discuss everything from how to potty-train to dealing with postpartum depression or domestic violence and where parents share experiences and advice while their children play together.
The strategies of Family Hui Dar ss Salaam Poultry and Vegetable project include the Following:
- Maintain the Family Hui Dar ss Salaam Poultry and Vegetable as an income generating activity for L4TT and an empowerment infastructure for new formed Family Hui groups within Dar es Salaam.
- Train the women in income generative activities in order to generate enough money to support their families.
- Act as a Hui demonstration center where women will meet to train and Seek information, acquire more efficient management skills in empowering themselves through poultry and vegetable farming.
- Help empower Hui women to objectively focus on the needs of the family and the demands of the market and promote high value market-oriented poultry and vegetable farming.
Justification of the Poultry Project
The demand for poultry meat, eggs and vegetable in Tanzania is higher than the supply and there are indications that this demand will continue to increase due to the decline of poultry and vegetable supply. Population in Tanzania is expected to increase to 70.1 million people by 2025; therefore, it will demand a sustainable use of the natural resources. In this context the potential for aquaculture to make an important contribution to food security and income generation in Tanzania is enormous.
This increasing in demand for poultry meat, eggs and vegetable is because of general improvement of standard of living of the people. In addition many supermarkets are also selling much vegetables, eggs and poultry meat. Poultry and vegetables are some of the most promising enterprises in the Tanzania mainly in large cities like Dar es Salaam. There is easy availability of day-old chicks, vegetable and poultry feeds as well as poultry drugs on the market. L4TT will organize qualified poultry and vegetable veterinary personnel who will be visiting the farm once a week to advice add capacity building to Hui women in poultry and vegetable.
Management
For any enterprise to succeed, proper and efficient management is essential in order to realize good returns on investment. Both poultry and vegetable farming are labour-intensive enterprises. For maximum production, efficient labour is required on daily basis. Therefore close supervision is necessary. Feeding, watering, cleaning and sanitation, observation of diseases and disorders, collection of products for market and arranging an efficient system of sales must be well coordinated. L4TT in collaboration with few hired laborers and Hui women will manage day to day operation of the farm.
