About Lead4Tomorrow – Tanzania
Family Hui / Familia Hai
Family Hui / Familia Hai is a term for a cooperative group working for a united purpose. In our Family Hui / Familia Hai program, hui are comprised of 10 or so families who come together to learn and support each other in raising their children in safe, nurturing environments. It begins with a 12-week positive parenting program, and continues as children advance through other stages of development. Hui are facilitated by trained peer leaders whose primary purpose is to help create a strong sense of community and mutual support within the hui. A critical aspect of modifying chapter summaries involves how to address attitudes and behaviors which may be detrimental to the health, safety and nurturing of children yet which commonly occur due to longstanding cultural practices. As these attitudes and behaviors are increasingly recognized as detrimental to the well-being of children, interest in addressing and modifying these practices is also increasing. Changing these practices, however, requires the leadership of respected local leaders. Family Hui materials attempt to raise these issues to be addressed at the local level.
Family Hui Framework
The Family Hui framework builds on the concepts of empathy (seeing things through the eyes of our children) and mindfulness (thoughtful rather than reactive responses to our children’s behaviors). More specifically, the primary guiding principles includes Program Vision: Every child in every family is thriving, healthy and safe – Program Mission: To support, encourage and empower families to meet the challenges of raising young children, by celebrating the joys and coping with the stresses in healthy ways. Family Hui supports families through neighborhood-based family groups, facilitated by trained group leaders; encourages families in an atmosphere of mutual respect to raise their children with loving guidance; empowers families by sharing of experiences, knowledge, and community resources.
